Environmental impact of Nestlé's bottled water business
In Sao Lourenco in Brazil, Nestle's pumping in an historic mineral water park is blamed for ruining the healing springs on which tourism in the small town is based. Contrary to federal law, Nestle demineralised the water to manufacture its Pure Life brand. While Nestle claims there has been no negative impact, tests commissioned by the BBC and official government test results found the opposite.

Superior
Courts Decision guarantying the Right to Water
The
decision was announced by the Special Jurisdiction Appellate Court
from the State of Paraná – bill of review 0208625-3,
reformulating the sentence given in the First Jurisdiction, guarantying
the
reestablishment of the water supply to Mr. Albertino Marques,
resident in Londrina, Paraná, by the water supply
company in 16.08.2002. The
decision was taken based on the appellant petitioner’s
constitutional rights, human rights and the right of the consumers.
It also
took into consideration the situation of vulnerability
of one of the dwellers in the
house, which was sick. It was considered that the situation of
sickness must prevail over the discussion
around the legality of the discontinuity of the water supply.
The Brazilian jurisprudence
has adopted a position considering illegal to interrupt the water
supply even with the
consumer’s default,
based on the consumers Code that forbids that the user is exposed
to shameful situations.

Report
from Porto Alegre
Events at the third day of the World Social Forum in Porto Alegre, Brazil were
in sharp contrast to the scene at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland.
Thousands of demonstrators clashed with police in the Swiss mountain resort,
and on the way to it, since many were stopped at a railway checkpoint enroute.
Police used water cannon mounted on trucks, tear gas and even small tractors
to push back the crowds who had come to stand in the snow and voice their opposition
to the policies of the Bush administration and the neo-liberal economic policies
the WEF is felt to represent.
